B.T. SWAMI
Extraordinary Princetonian, Black Leader, & Hindu Teacher
Bhakti Tirtha Swami (John E. Favors ‘72) was an early Black student leader and co-founder of the Third World Center (which was later renamed the Carl A. Fields Center). After graduating from Princeton, he went on to become one of the world’s first African American Hindu gurus, ordained as His Holiness Bhakti Tirtha Swami. An acclaimed spiritual teacher, author, and community organizer, he passed away from cancer in 2005.
We are now in the process of creating a virtual memorial site celebrating the life and legacy of this remarkable alumnus, historically significant figure, and beloved teacher of devotional Hindu wisdom. Please check back with us as we work to make this tribute a reality.
We also welcome your support and contributions to the Bhakti Tirtha Swami Memorial Fund, which will help us to honor him with iconography. The fund has already resulted in the establishment of a memorial stone in the university chapel in February 2023.
